The Bolton Family Residence
(This building still stands adjacent to Veterans' View Park)
The land and buildings, south of Veterans View Park were the property of Peter BOLTON. An apple orchard once stood on the eastern half of this property - almost directly behind the MACGREGOR store.
Arnot MACGREGOR wrote:
"On this lot was the present large stone house. In the barn was a stable that accomodated a team of horses and several cows, besides room for the storage of hay and other products gathered from the adjoining 10-12 acres. I do not remember Mrs. BOLTON as I believe she died before 1900 but I know they had three daughters. One was married to Ben EASTMAN of Felton, Ontario. A second married a Mr. HOWE. His [I assume Mr. HOWE's] daughter Nellie came to visit the BOLTON home, and later married Roy FETTERLEY. The third daughter, Mamie remained with her father (Peter) until he died. About all I remember about her was when I was about five years old, she had gathered a dozen youngsters and decorated a small wagon with flags, then proceded to march up and down the street one fourth of July [James Arnot MACGREGOR resided in the states when this was written - perhaps he meant the 1st of July]."
The building was rented following the death of Mr. BOLTON - and one of those occupants was Doctor David KIRK.
Allen STEVEN eventually purchased the house and property, then passed it on to son Walter. Allen died February 17, 1945 and his wife Hester in 1934. Walter died January 10th, 1966.
